So Much Progress! Footage of Our Autistic Son at 2 Years Vs. Almost 5.
Our son Dexter is autistic and has speech difficulties. He was almost completely non-speaking until age 4.5. We are rapidly approaching his 5th birthday (eek!), and in a recent nostalgic search through some old videos I found one of us interacting when he was just 2 and a half years old. You can really see how far he has come!!! So proud of our amazing boy.

I really loved your video. It was very clear and you spoke about important issues that I believe passionately about, in particular being there for your child. I have been an educator for the past 28 plus years and I have had the pleasure of teaching a wide range of autistic children and young adults, many of whom have skills far beyond neurotypical people, many of whom have gone on to be highly successful in the field of music. I have delivered some lessons where the student chose to be nonverbal but communicated with me via music alone, but I was acutely aware that the parents were trying to manipulate the child’s behaviour to fit social norms, which for me was not OK. It was stressful for the child and interrupted the unique communication we had built up. It is so important for every person to be truly seen and accepted, and for their unique viewpoint to be appreciated. I have Tourette’s myself and am almost certainly somewhere on the spectrum. I find social situations extremely difficult and am often aware that both my behaviour and speech patterns are unusual. I often feel that I am odd or that I am avoided but actually I prefer to be a spectator and social analyst than part of the noisy throng. I am carrying out educational research at my place of work which is not connected with neurodiverse people, however, I am an avid reader of current research on the subject and very happy to comment on my on experiences as a teacher and as a currently undiagnosed individual.

My daughter is only 7 months old, but I see identical stim patterns in her as I see here in Dexter. The stiff arms out to the side, the little dance spasms, the way he seems to push away at you when you get close to his personal space. She's also not babbling at all yet, not even a single consonant. It's hard to stay optimistic in the process since it feels like my dreams are crashing down around me, and all it makes me want to do is commend you guys for being such great parents. Very strong people.

My 2 year old is EXACTLY the same. He is a goofy lil dude and I love him bunches. We are waiting for an Autism eval currently. We are also in speech therapy since he only has one word and its "yeah" but its more like "YEEeeeeeeaaaaAAH". He loves variation in tones and volume. He is also BIG on vestibular activities. Swinging and the trampoline are his faves. VERY sensory seeking. Very fun kid to be around. It will be nice to get some additional supports for him as he grows!

Thank you for your video post. I am a grandmother to an adorable 28-month-old boy. Your videos are quite accurate to what I have experienced during his early months. Although he has not progressed to where Dexter is at 28 months, he has not received any help yet. Unfortunately, I feel that my son and his fiancée are a bit in denial. They can see that certain milestones have not been achieved, but they are holding onto the fact that there is no true diagnosis at this time. I believe they are learning about expressive issues, but they are not being forthright about where he is at in his development. My son was in the gifted program growing up but was challenging on so many levels. Today, I would say he is quite narcissistic, so I have to be careful not to insinuate anything that may sound negative or questionable about my grandson's development. I want to study on my own so that when I spend time with him, which is about every other weekend day, I can help him in any way possible. Your videos are helpful. Thank you for being transparent and genuine. 🙂
